Back to school: a checklist and a routine that survives October
Last updated:
Most US schools start between mid-August and early September. The first week goes better when the shopping, forms and sleep schedule are sorted two weeks before — and the term goes better when the weekly routine is written down.

Two weeks before
- Check the supply list from the school or teacher, and buy what is missing.
- Fill in forms: emergency contacts, medical information, permissions, lunch accounts.
- Book any required check-ups or vaccinations; check what the school needs as proof.
- Move bedtime earlier by 15 minutes every few days until it matches school nights.
Step by step
- Get the school's lists and calendar. Supplies, forms, key dates. Most are published two to four weeks before the first day.
- Shop and fill in forms early. Two weeks ahead, while shelves are stocked and offices answer quickly.
- Reset sleep gradually. Fifteen minutes earlier every few days until bedtime matches school nights.
- Write the weekday routine. Morning, after school and evening, with fixed activities as repeats.
- Enter the term's events. Holidays, conferences, trips and deadlines, each with a reminder.
- Review every Sunday. Ten minutes for the week's activities, payments and forms.

A weekday routine on paper
Write down the school-day rhythm: wake-up, breakfast, leaving time, after-school activities, homework, screen time and bedtime. Put the fixed activities in as repeating events. Children cope better with a routine they can see, and parents spend less time negotiating each evening.
Prepare the night before: bags packed, clothes chosen, lunch made. Mornings are the worst time for decisions.
Collect the term's dates
School calendars list holidays, early dismissals, picture day, parent-teacher conferences and exam weeks. Enter them all once at the start of the term, with reminders a few days before. A single afternoon of entering dates saves a term of “was that today?”.
Setting it up in Pladay
- Repeat activities by weekday: “Soccer practice every tue and thu at 4pm” (recurring tasks).
- Use one list per child, or tags such as #emma and #leo, to see each child's week.
- A Sunday evening weekly review catches forms, payments and events coming up.
- Students in college can start from the university student setup.
FAQ
When should we start the back-to-school routine?
About two weeks before the first day: sleep times first, then shopping and forms, then a practice morning or two.
Can kids use Pladay too?
Older students can use it on their own device. For younger children, many parents keep one list per child in their own account.
