Moving checklist: a timeline from four weeks out to the first week after
Last updated:
Moving is a project with a fixed deadline and dozens of small dependencies. The trick is not remembering everything — it is putting everything on a timeline once, anchored to the moving date.

Four weeks before
Fix the date and get at least three quotes from movers; compare what is included (packing, insurance, disassembly) rather than only the price. Once you book, keep the contract somewhere you can find it on moving day. This is also the time to start decluttering: everything you throw away now is something you do not pay to move.
Book large-item disposal early, because collection slots fill up, and schedule the transfer of internet and TV service.
Two weeks to one week before
- Arrange final meter readings and the transfer of electricity, gas and water.
- Change your address for mail, deliveries, banks and subscriptions. Many postal services offer mail forwarding for a few months.
- Start packing rooms you use least. Label boxes by room and keep a short list of what is in each.
- Eat down the freezer and fridge.
The last days and moving day
Pack a “first night” box: chargers, toiletries, medication, a kettle, bedding and the tools to reassemble the bed. Keep valuables and documents with you, not in the van. If possible clean the new place before the furniture arrives and photograph any existing damage — those photos matter when your deposit is returned.
On the day, settle any payments, collect the keys, and check every item against the mover's list before signing.
After the move
Register your new address with the authorities if your country requires it, and do it within the legal deadline (in some countries this is as short as 14 days). If you rent, follow the local rules for protecting your deposit. Update your address with your employer, doctor and insurance.
