Building a reading habit in 30 days

Last updated:

Reading more is rarely about time. It is about making reading the default at one moment of the day. Thirty days is long enough to make that moment automatic.

Decide the book before the habit

Choose the first book before day one, and pick something you actually want to read, not something you think you should read. A book you look forward to does half the work. Have the next one ready, so finishing a book is not the moment the habit stops.

Anchor it to a moment and make it small

Attach reading to something you already do every day: the commute, after dinner, the first ten minutes in bed. Set a minimum that is almost embarrassingly small, such as ten pages or fifteen minutes. On good days you will read more; on bad days you still keep the streak.

Keep a few notes

Write down one sentence per session: an idea, a quote or a question. After a month you have a small record of what you read and why it mattered. It also makes the weekly review more interesting than counting pages.

Review each week

At the end of each week, look at how many days you read and what got in the way. Move the reading time if it keeps colliding with something else. On day 30, write a short reflection and choose next month's book.

FAQ

How much should I read each day?

Start with an amount you could manage on your busiest day, like ten pages. Consistency matters more than volume in the first month.

Do audiobooks count?

If they help you read more, yes. The habit is the time you spend with books, whatever the format.
